Las Vegas McCarran's 'high-tech Challenge for Showpiece Terminal

Incorporating the most up to date technologies into Las Vegas McCarran's new showpiece terminal was one of the biggest challenges facing designers, according to a leading consultant.

Riano, who has near to 30 years' experience in professional planning and architectural design, said: "The thing that continues challenge us, and it's been this way for years, is the issue of technology developing so quickly.

There will be 100 percent wireless internet coverage in the new terminal and, this being Las Vegas, 300 slot machines.

Bechtel has been pivotal in more than 80 major airport projects around the world, with 40 projects in the last decade.

"It embraces self-check in, and anything that is cutting edge, it has taken it to the next level.

New technologies include kiosks equipped for self-baggage check, self-boarding gates and automated aircraft docking.

"It is difficult because airports take so long to develop - five or six years - and the world changes five times in that period.

Riano heads up Bechtel's Aviation Practice, which provides strategic planning and technical support for all of the company's airport projects worldwide.

Steve Riano, Aviation Practice Leader for Bechtel, which is overseeing the new build, said the challenge arose because of the fast paced nature of change in the technology world.

Riano added: "McCarran is known far and wide as being one of the most innovative and technology driven airports that exists.

"You have to maintain flexibility to incorporate designs later along the way.

It is also project managing the development of New Doha International Airport, London Gatwick Airport and the new terminal at Muscat International Airport.
