BUILDING work on a £11 million redevelopment of a Notts college campus is under way.

Vision West Notts' sports hall will be demolished to make way for a new teaching block including modern classrooms, ITC suites, hair and beauty salons, a professional health spa, and fine-dining restaurant with training kitchen.

The work at the campus in Derby Road, Mansfield, started on Monday, and is expected to be open in January next year.

The work is part of an overall £24 million redevelopment of the college.

The new buildings will accommodate learners studying hair, beauty and complementary therapies - currently based at The Academy in Mansfield town centre - and the travel and hospitality curriculums, that are spread across the campus.

Other works involve covering a courtyard with a part- glazed roof to supply additional learning and social space.

College principal and chief executive Asha Khemka OBE said: "Construction of this inspirational building represents a major investment by the college and is the cornerstone of our multi-million pound redevelopment.

"Not only will it offer our students unrivalled vocational learning opportunities, the public can look forward to enjoying the facilities that may train the hair stylists, beauticians, holistic therapists and chefs of tomorrow.

"In bringing this highly-anticipated scheme to fruition our contractors will minimise disruption to students, staff and the local community so that it remains business as usual at college."

The scheme is being funded by the college, aided by £1.9 million from the Skills Funding Agency's enhanced renewal grant - a national pot to aid colleges modernise their buildings and facilities.

Meanwhile, construction of a state-of-the-art new sports hall, to replace the one being demolished, is due for completion in May.
