Beware of scams about storm damage Since the massive storm hit the Dells area on Memorial Day weekend, our town has been invaded by contractors making promises to homeowners about insurance claims. Additionally, once contracts are signed, the homeowner is obligated to not only have the work completed, but to pay for the uncovered portion as well, or lose their insurance. We have found that many homeowners don't understand how insurance claims work, and are shocked when they discover that insurance companies may only pay out a small percentage of the cost to fix or replace storm damage, based on depreciation. Homeowners need to be wary of any out-of-town contractor collecting a down payment on services that may never be completed. Long Life Roofing has had numerous calls from homeowners, stating some alarming instances where they hear a noise outside and actually find someone up on their roof, without the homeowner ever calling for either an estimate or service. I recommend to everyone in our community to chat to a local contractor you can trust if you need residential repairs - don't sign anything, make any down payments, or cash any insurance checks from anyone not known in the community. |
