Jubilee revellers brave poor weather across Wales

Jubilant jubilee revellers across Wales braved the rain to raise a glass in celebration of the Queen's landmark 60 year reign today.

A steady flow of tourists and locals carrying picnic lunches arrived slowly on the brightly decorated street scene.

Ceri Jones, 31, from Neath, got in the party atmosphere by offering round sausages rolls to more than a dozen friends at the Big Lunch.

A big screen put in place ready to relay the Olympics to west Wales crowds was doing double duty showing the Thames pageant.

Elsewhere Pembroke Castle, west Wales, is playing host to hundreds of Jubilee revellers over the full four day royal celebration.

"We've got circus workshops, magicians, face paining, bouncy castles, balloon modelling, and a big screen set up in the grounds," said Jon Williams, castle manager.

"We have friends here from all over the place, Cardiff, Neath and as far away as Holland.

"None of us are exactly royalists but we're not anti-royalists either.

Music, food and festivities were the order of the day, but umbrellas, raincoats and determination to party were also all in evidence.

"We get together like this every year. Rule Britannia," he said.

"It's a shame about the rain but it won't change our plans at all.

City centre big screens relayed images of the Thames Diamond jubilee Pageant for thousands to witness.

In Cardiff scores of people were on the scene early at the start of the city's Big Lunch celebration, in St Mary's Street.

More than 300 official street parties were taking place across Wales with many more impromptu celebration expected.

Despite sometimes teeming rain hardy party-goers were determined to see out the celebration to its end.

Similar celebrations kicked off across Wales today, with a Big Jubilee Lunch for hundreds under way in Castle Square, Swansea.

"The Knights of Longshanks are also here all weekend entertaining the crowds.

"We do this every year and it was my turn to host it this year so we just went for the jubilee in Cardiff as a theme.
