| Leilani Bishop, a Vineland High School junior, is hoping she can help cure cancer with shear will. Friday, right after school, the three met up at the Hair With Flair salon on Park Avenue to shave their heads for the St. Bishop couldn't stay for the full 24 hours. Back in March, Bishop was Skyping with Leinen, who attends Schalick High School, talking about St. Claudio, a VHS junior, agreed to join them. Settling into the chair, a cape-wrapped Bishop locked eyes with her reflection watching stylist, Stephanie Rodriguez, run the razor over her head. "I feel like I'm doing something wrong," Rodriguez said, transforming Bishop's hairstyle from there to bare. Laughing, she realized she'll have to find a whole new way to battle stress. "I play with my hair when I'm nervous," she said, running her hand over a downy head. She said she was taking her SAT exam this morning. "I feel great, I wanted to make a statement for something I believe in," Bishop said. The dramatic statement rewarded Bishop with a realized dream. At 3 p. The salon volunteered the hairdressers' time and salon owner, Carol Frey, raffled off a $100 gift certificate to help boost the students' charity donation. The newly shorn trio had little time to take in their new looks. They were part of a team participating in the Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. Her hair was long-enough to be eligible for a "Locks of Love" contribution. Their combined effort raised about $1,500 for the organization. |
