Laundry for Foodies: The Dining Room Meets the Laundry Room

Laundry for Foodies: The Dining Room Meets the Laundry Room

When you have a lapful of spaghetti sauce or wine, together with thinking about the stain agent, also consider the garment -- silk, wool, and leather are far more delicate than cotton and will require a professional cleaning. Red wine (and purple grape juice) are best treated immediately, as they have a tendency to set swiftly.

Tomato Stains Pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, salsa, bruschetta--they seem like our friends when they are on the plate. Like red wine, these can be a few of the most stubborn stains to remove, and like red wine, they ought to be treated rapidly with a cold water rinse and a detergent treatment.

Mustard Mustard stains even faster than ketchup, but the removal method is largely the same: remove excess from the fabric by scraping (not rubbing) and then rinse well in cold water. Wash the garment in cold or cool water, but do not dry the garment until the stain has been completely removed.

Oil/Grease/Fat Who among us has not had an errant piece of lettuce fling oily vinaigrette upon our clothing? These are frequently my toughest enemy, and I will admit my oil-removal success rate is not as high as say, red wine.

As much as I love my stain stick, I find that a spray stain gel works best in a tomato sauce situation. Even when removed, red wine can leave a shadowy stain, so if possible remove the garment and rinse it thoroughly under very cold water, and then treat with detergent and wash.

Out on the town? Blot the stain with cold water until it is as light as is possible. The options are be vigilant or switch to creamy dressings, I guess.

Ink Ink is definitely a foodie stain. (If you do not ask waiters where their favorite places to eat and drink are, you are missing out on an invaluable resource. ) I suppose I could stop taking notes and do it all on my phone, but I'm old and I still like to write things longhand sometimes.

Red Wine The more red wine I enjoy, the more likely I am to get it on my clothes. That blouse is now a beautiful nightshirt, and looks incredible with my hot-pink flannel pajama pants.

These days, silk goes straight to the dry cleaner. If the initial spill has left a lot of excess food on top of the fabric, try to scrape it off without spreading the stain. If the stained garment's instructions indicate that bleach is appropriate, by all means wash it in bleach, but if not, use a color-safe bleach or oxygen-based detergent to continue removing the stain.

Your Kit ps To fight stains on the go, I keep a TSA-approved one-quart Ziploc bag in my purse, which contains the following tools in my stain-fighting arsenal:

• Tide (or your favorite brand) Stain Stick • Travel tissues for blotting • Travel-size hairspray • Travel-size cornstarch baby powder

A few general rules to follow when removing any stain (I learned these from my Mommy):.

Parks Dept. offers plots for rent in community garden

Parks Dept. offers plots for rent in community garden

PADUCAH - If you want to have a garden this year, but just do not have the room, Paducah Parks may have a solution. Community Garden applications will be available until all plots are rented. The Community Garden will be available for renters through October 31.

This is the third year for the Parks Department to offer a community garden for the public.

The Community Garden is based in the open field at the corner of 14th and Madison Streets. Water is accessible at the site, and the garden is gated to keep out small animals. The dimensions of each plot are approximately 12 feet by 8 feet. A specific plot or plots may be chosen as soon as the fee payment is made. As his Eagle project to get the highest honor awarded in Boy Scouting as Eagle Scout, Matthew Rea, a member of Boy Scout Troop 7, worked with the Parks Department to expand the Community Garden. The project doubled the size of the garden from 20 plots to 40 plots.

Fire ant colonies seem to be down dramatically

Fire ant colonies seem to be down dramatically

The red imported fire ant, one of the most horrifying of the foreign species that have established themselves in the United States, appears to be in retreat. , sometime between 1933 and 1945. Even among stinging insects, their habits are horrifying.

"These parasites have been doing very, very well in spreading through the infected area," said Robert K. "They are everywhere the ants are.

"In South Florida, the red imported fire ant has declined considerably in the last 20 years," said William Kern, associate professor of entomology at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. " The ants, whose name derives from the pain inflicted by their venom, arrived by ship in either Pensacola or Mobile, Ala. In Broward County, scientists have marked a reduction of nearly 90 percent in fire ant mounds in suburban swales. Department of Agriculture scientists will be crisscrossing Florida and Georgia to inspect the number and size of mounds, with an additional month to analyze the data and draw conclusions about the status of these invaders from South America.

Christopher Cavanagh, vice president and general manager of Petri's Positive Pest Control Inc. "There have been times when it was a lot more of a problem," he said.

Efforts to control these vicious insects involved an appropriately lurid parasite: various species of brain-eating flies.

They kill baby sea turtles, newborn calves that don't get off the ground fast enough and ground-nesting birds.

Scientists say the evidence so far is compelling but anecdotal. Porter suggests changes in climate, disease and phorid flies.

But so far, signs point to fewer colonies. These flies have established themselves throughout Florida and are among several possible reasons suggested by scientists for the ant's decline. But the frequency of calls has gone down by about 50 percent. They cause an estimated $600 million damage every year.

Pest control companies, for whom red imported fire ants had been a reliable moneymaker, say service calls have plummeted.

"It's better, depending your point of view," said Al Hoffer, owner of Al Hoffer's Pest Protection in Coral Springs, which serves all of southeast Florida.

The flies have been distributed throughout South Florida, and scientists plan to introduce more species of them because each species attacks a different-sized ant.
