Animal rights activist arrested after chaining herself to door at Wayne State

Camille Marino was taken into custody by campus police around noon, shortly after she showed up, said Matt Lockwood, a WSU spokesman. On Jan.

Marino was arrested in Florida in February and later extradited to Michigan after she violated a protection order that O'Leary sought in late October.

Marino was ordered in March to remove any threatening statements from her social media sites about Donal O'Leary, a professor at the university who does research that involves animals.

"Wayne State is dedicated to the humane treatment of animals, but also recognizes the key benefits of research involving animals," said Wednesday's statement from the university.

Lockwood said WSU police who found Marino chained to the door at the library cut the lock and arrested her for criminal trespass.

Lockwood said Marino was being held by Detroit Police.

Marino has said she is convinced that scientists like O'Leary are secretly subjecting animals to unconscionable acts by conducting experiments them, and the public needs to be made aware.

The university said O'Leary serves on the editorial boards of major scientific journal and has continually been funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 2 decades.

The WSU professor and director of cardiovascular research sought the order after comments and his home address were posted on a "Negotiation is Over" blog and social media sites.
