| Riverside Tests the Market and Claims Fifth Exit of 2012 The Riverside Company has sold Global Claims Services (GCS), a Jacksonville, Florida-based insurance service provider helping determine fair market replacement valuation of damaged flooring and exterior building materials, to Windjammer Capital Investors. At the present time, the company conducts more than 500,000 tests annually. Together with the management team, Riverside helped GCS expand its offerings beyond carpet, siding and roofing to now include wood, tile, stone, vinyl and laminate. "Global Claims Services is a shining example of the work we've been doing to get more than two decades - finding, buying and building special niche leading businesses around the world," said Suzy Kriscunas, Riverside Managing Partner. Launched in 1993, GCS initially concentrated its testing services on damaged flooring using its in-house laboratory to examine carpet samples. Working with Kriscunas for Riverside on the sale were Principal Chip Walker and Vice Presidents Marty Graul and Rob Langley. Riverside supplemented the management team with the recruitment of a brand new CEO and CFO which enabled the founder to transition out of the business. 8x gross cash-on-cash return and a 29% gross IRR to Riverside and its investors (Riverside Capital Appreciation Fund V). Moreover, we were able to deploy several of Riverside's Toolkit resources to help grow the business organically. Global Claims Services is now the leader in the independent testing arena and well positioned to grow for many years to come. Lazard Middle Market advised GCS and Riverside on the transaction, and Jones Day provided legal counsel. Furthermore, the acquisition of Insurance Claims Collaborative of Alliston, Ontario in 2011 broadened the company's reach to include the Canadian market. Riverside acquired GCS in May 2008 and grew the company over its four year period of ownership through two add-on acquisitions and organically expanding the company's services. |

| Maite Catering Bringing Colombian Arepas and More to the Bay Constanza Ortiz of Maite Catering pretended to glare at me when I liken arepas to pupusas. Ortiz got her start with La Cocina two years ago, launching Maite Catering with a vision of making bite size treats with a little Latin flare. This is a transformation to get excited about. While arepas have crept into corners of the San Francisco food scene, Ortiz is determined to bring a bigger taste of Colombia to the Bay. She also realized that a bite wasn't enough and people simply wanted more. After lots of experimenting and plenty of positive feed back, Ortiz is making the jump to a dinner menu and simultaneously going all Colombian all the time. She admits, of course, that other Colombians put her food to its truest test, but she is passing with flying colors. Ajiaco, a Colombian chicken soup with corn and three kinds of potatoes, is of the utmost simplicity, but also has a flavor that is rarely reproduced outside of Bogota. "It is so rewarding how excited they are about this food from Colombia. Ortiz says, smiling, that it was the ajiaco that put them over the edge. Intriguing, no matter what, and certainly a way to switch up your soup. She recently did a tequila menu pairing at Tres Agaves -- "Who cares that we do not drink tequila in Colombia?" she says. "The food was all Colombian and people loved it. "My biggest goal is for people to try something different," she says. We get caught up in countries of origin again as she gives Chile credit for baked empanadas, an assertion many an Argentinian, including San Francisco's own El Porteño, might contest. Their praise for the patacones, (a sort of plantain pancake served with a wide range of toppings), tamales and other food from the mother country was anything but conservative. Colombian empanadas are fried and traditionally full of leftovers. Ortiz envisions teaching a cooking class at the SF FoodLab, where she has done a few dinner pop ups, to show people how empanadas are something they can make at home. Arepas are made with a cooked arepa flour, full of cheese and cooked on a buttered grill. Ortiz cannot pin down the flavor of guascas, only calling it "extremely different," though I've heard it likened to boiled peanuts. Ortiz is looking forward to the future, presently focusing on what revamping Maite Catering really entails and getting particularly excited for the San Francisco Street Food Festival. American industries ran at full tilt during World War II. Men fought in blankets. The author of "Smoke" was carpet mill executive Reginald Harris, probably best remembered as a choral director and musician. Stowitts was born in the town of Root. Most of his working life he was employed at the Recorder, serving as managing editor for 24 years. Other local industries worked on the war effort. Nearly 500 male employees of the company had enlisted or been drafted. Men waited in blankets. Both of Amsterdam's carpet companies used their machine shops to produce a wide range of war-related products. And we may rest well assured that they wall nobly play the part assigned to them. Boxes were used for shipping during the war, and the Inman box factory on Guy Park Avenue was a leading manufacturer of boxes and paper box machinery. " The cover of the book was made of canvas, produced at Mohawk. As for blankets, "Smoke" noted, "Men lived in blankets. Women were prominent in the workforce as men had gone to war. Some 900 Mohawk employees were reported serving overseas in 1943. The 600 workers at the Chalmers Knitting Mill on the South Side still made underwear in the 1940s, but most orders came from the military. Smeallie and Voorhees paper mill on Forest Avenue was manufacturing forty tons of paper board and wrapping paper a day, using waste paper as raw material. Collette Manufacturing Company on Clizbe Avenue turned from making a million baseballs a year and other sporting goods to projects that helped the war effort. Men died in blankets. Nearly 60 percent of workers checked emails on family outings while nearly forty percent of workers admitted to checking their email at the dinner table. Workers were not limited to checking emails in the bedroom. and the same number said they would not go to sleep without checking their email. Half of the respondents said they checked their emails while in bed. Some workers, however, may be taking that convenience a bit too far. | Peel Health warns against unregulated tattoo/piercing salons Thinking of getting a tattoo? Peel Public Health advises you do some homework and consider the risks before putting ink to skin. If getting a tattoo or piercing, residents are encouraged to select an inspected establishment and to learn what can be expected from the service. Inspections ensure minimum standards for cleaning, disinfection and basic infection control practices against infection and transmission of blood-borne illnesses like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. As such, the local health unit is alerting residents regarding the risk of obtaining tattoos or piercing from uninspected establishments after receiving complaints Peel Health says uninspected shops, such as those in private dwellings, are popping up across the region. The increased popularity of tattoos and body piercing means that more tattoo/piercing studios are emerging to meet a growing demand for these services. Jewelry used for piercing should be packaged and made of high-grade, sterile surgical steel or gold and piercing guns need to be used only for lobes - other piercing requires a new, individually packaged, sterile needle. As well, artists should not be re-dipping needles in ink used on other clients. Most home establishments are not under inspection, says the region, noting such establishments present a risk of infection and disease from equipment that is not properly sterilized. To protect public health, Peel inspectors conduct regular checks of personal services settings offering services such as tattoos, body and ear piercing, manicures, pedicures, hairdressing/barbering, permanent make-up, spa treatments, hair removal and facials. "Our goal is to supply the education and information residents require to reduce their risk of infection," Callanan said. Peel Public Health is offering education along with a list of inspected establishments to help residents reduce their risk for contracting infection or disease.
