The ordinance, which will go into effect in about 30 days, will require fees ranging from $50 to $100 dependant on salon size.

As others spoke, most against the fee instead of the inspection, Gonzales became angered, with outbursts that prompted a warning that he calm down or be escorted out of Town Hall.

In nail salons, Sullivan noted that ventilation is a key element, on account of potentially toxic chemicals.

Gonzales said he would prefer to have a committee of salon owners monitoring businesses rather than government. They noted that barbers and hairdressers must obtain a $50 annual state license to operate.

In his experience with other towns that have such ordinances, Avery said, punitive steps are seldom necessary.

First Selectman Bill Davidson said this is all about public safety.
