| NDEQ awards grants for rubber recycling Beatrice Public Schools was among a list of Sunland-area entities receiving grants from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality this week. According to the NDEQ, Nebraskans generate more than 1. Pawnee City Schools also received a grant to update playground facilities for preschool and elementary students. "We knew we would apply for it from the beginning when we started this project," Lopez said. We like to see the highest possible beneficial use of these old tires and these projects help us reach that goal. Nearly $92,000 was give to BPS for rubber crumbs to be used on its field turf and synthetic track projects, NDEQ reported -- a 25 percent reimbursement. "Nebraskans pay a $1 fee for each new tire they purchase," Linder said according to a press release. "We were excited to get the grant," Grizzle said. "We put in place a poured-in place surface in our two playgrounds," superintendent Stephen Grizzle said. "We're going to apply that toward what we owe on the stadium," he said. Superintendent Jon Lopez said the district worked with contractors from Symmetry Turf Installation, Nemaha Landscape Construction and Caspers Construction to apply for the grant. BPS hoped to receive as much as $100,000 for the grant but is glad to receive the $91,899, Lopez said. The school recently relocated the upper-elementary playground and purchased new equipment, pouring in the finely shredded rubber padding underneath. The grants given to local entities are part of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Grants program administered by NDEQ. |
