Mr Scandizzo made the journey from his award-winning South Yarra salon to the south-west to address the "next generation of hairdressers".

"My dad said 'Why don't you be a hairdresser? You get to work with women all of the time,' so I did.

"Prepare them for jobs, show them there are different options.

Mr Scandizzo's A-List clientele includes Ruby Rose, Harry Kewell, Rebecca Maddern, Cathy Freeman and a range of AFL players.

Mr Scandizzo said many people shrugged hairdressing off as a dead-end job when instead it was a career that could extend far beyond the salon floor.

"I had no idea what I wanted to do, it was either this or a carpenter or something.

"It has so much to supply photo shoots, fashion weeks, television, shows.

"I was a high school dropout," he said.

Mr Scandizzo has worked on television programs Beauty and the Geek and Shear Genius (USA) and was named the Australian hairdresser of the year for 2010 and 2011.

"A lot of students do not really know what hairdressing can lead to," he said.

"I want to inspire them and let them know what's ahead of them," the creative director of Joey Scandizzo Salon said.

In other SWTAFE hairdressing news, former student Kelsey Pekin will take her trade across the globe when she starts work in a Steiner cruise ship salon.

"The harder you work at it, the more opportunities that come.

The 19-year-old will fly to London tomorrow to begin training with the international resort and spa company.
