Volunteers work to repair home during annual TEAM Day
Volunteer Kyle Stuller, 20, takes part in the seventh annual Together Everyone Achieves More Day Saturday in Mills River. "There's a lot of work to do," Kirby said. "I've been pretty impressed by the response from the vendors too," Kirby said. At the Gilliland home, volunteers pounded down the foundation for a brand new walkway behind the home, leading up to a newly built ramp. The grandson helped out before Saturday by tearing out the bathroom. Kirby said one challenge was working on a mobile home, because the crews are used to working on stick-built houses. On Saturday, a team of volunteer builders led by Kirby descended on the mobile home to help during the seventh annual TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) Day, a collaboration between local nonprofit Housing Assistance Corp and businesses with the Hendersonville Home Builders Association. But vendors donated supplies for the repairs, and Kennedy said they had more new vendors and suppliers donating than ever before. The home on Rachels Drive needed every thing from new flooring, decking and siding to walls, kitchen cabinets and a bathroom. "I'm thankful that there are organizations to help people really in need," Anthony Gilliland said. "And the list gets longer," said Todd Kirby from Kirby Custom Builders. "It's really huge for us," said Patrick Kennedy, executive director for Housing Assistance. Seventy-five volunteers on four crews worked on homes across the county. Owner Sylvester Gilliland, an 88-year-old World War II veteran and widower, lives in the home with his two daughters and a son, according to grandson Anthony Gilliland. Anthony Gilliland said the work will help keep his grandfather in the home he's had all his life. "I love doing it," Kirby said. |
