Big hotels lay off staff as low season starts

HUNDREDS of hotel workers at the Coast are required to lose their jobs as the tourism sector is presently recording low guest numbers, following the beginning of the low season.

Mombasa and Coast Tourist Association chairman Mohammed Hersi also said the sector which was down at the moment is expected to pick from August when the high season sets in . Kangangi's said the sector was now relying on domestic tourism and conferencing to survive, sentiments that were also echoed by Mombasa Continental Hotel General Manager Charles Gichohi who said most of the hotels had been compelled to cut their rates by up to 30 per cent to attract local tourists and conference venue seekers.
