Now it's time for the boys to look beautiful too

Now it's time for the boys to look beautiful too

Laura Green is busy giving a manicure to a client at Clifton Therapy Centre, in Bristol. "You can see the influence of programmes like Jersey Shore and The Only Way Is Essex. "We were actually taught at college that if a man came in for a treatment to always leave the door of the room open. "It was as though if a man wanted a treatment he was being seedy. People want to look good – the guys as well as the girls – and they're prepared to do something about it. " Jethro worked as a model in London for 15 years after getting spotted by a scout at Clothes Show Live. He is now concentrating on his singing career as Alonewolf, with the assistance of his cousin, the Brit Award- winner Ed Sheeran, who sings on his album and has performed with him. "But I just grit my teeth. " Jethro, 35, who lives in Horfield, declares: "Nowadays lots of guys are having pedicures, manicures, Botox and massages. " His view is shared by Tom, 29, of Longwell Green, who runs his own catering company The Flavour Smith. " Laura, who is manager of Clifton Therapy Centre, confirms that male customers cope better with the pain of having their hair ripped out than many women might expect. "Now more and more men are taking care of their appearance, and it's just as acceptable for a man to come and get his nails done. "Back waxes are extremely popular, and we get a large amount of blokes who are cyclists coming in for waxing. "Three of my mates in London have had it done, and it's made a massive difference to their appearance so I thought I'd give it a try," he says. I've also done a couple of eyebrow shapes. Becky says: "When I qualified in 1997 men never came into a beauty salon, but I would say that now probably 30 per cent of our customers are men. "When I started out in beauty 15 years ago we hardly ever saw male clients. "I have a lot of regular male customers, a lot of whom have found us after being recommended by their mates. "A lot of blokes go to the gym to work out their bodies, and going to a salon is just another way of looking after yourself. Male clients have become a familiar feature at the salon, which is owned by Becky Rowe and provides male grooming options including a Luxury Pamper Package for men, alongside treatments favoured by female customers such as Eyelash Extensions and Full Set Gel Nail Extensions. "Beauty salons used to be seen as somewhere only women visited, but we now have just as many male clients booking in for waxing, facials and even manicures and pedicures," she says.
